Web Design 101

Here’s what you’ll need to get up and running with your website:

  • A domain name
  • A design
  • Hosting
  • Content

A domain name simply put is a unique address a user will type into their browser to find your website. It needs to be registered and renewed on an annual basis. I can assist you with registration and pointing the domain to your host server. If you are up for doing it yourself I recommend using www.GoDaddy.com . For a more in depth description see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name

A design is the basic look and feel, navigation and functionality of your website. You should surf around the web to get ideas of your likes and dislikes and incorporate the things you do like into your design. Get an idea of what color combination’s you like, what sites are easy to find the content you are looking for etc.

Hosting is basically a computer where your website files are stored. Certain features and software is (or should be) part of your hosting package such as email and databases. I can accommodate almost any hosting needs. If you are doing it on your own I recommend  using Host Gator.

Content is basically the text, images, audio or video files contained within your website. For the most part it is up to the client to decide what content to include. Most items can be sent as email attachments. Stock images are also an option.

I hope this helps give you an idea of what you’ll need to get started and feel free to contact me with your questions.
