In the past you had to download the plugin, unzip the file and transfer the files back up to your site via FTP.

Now when a plugin becomes outdated and requires an update you simply click on the update link. In addition from the Manage Plugins page there is a Plugin Browser/Installer function. It just can’t get any easier. Once you’ve found a plugin you like, click on install. It will tell you if the software has been tested on your version of Wordpress.
